Battery sizing decisions for commercial solar in South Africa are rarely just a matter of choosing the biggest system a budget allows. A battery energy storage system, or BESS, that is sized correctly for backup power will often be the wrong size for arbitrage, and a battery sized for arbitrage may fall short the moment demand charges spike. Before a single unit is ordered, a business needs to be clear about which problem the battery is actually meant to solve, because that decision shapes the return on the investment for years to come.

## Why battery sizing decisions shape your return

Get battery sizing for commercial solar in South Africa wrong in either direction and the cost shows up on the balance sheet. Oversize the system and a business pays for capacity it never uses, stretching out the payback period unnecessarily.
