Mining

Renewable energy for South African mining operations

Large baseload demand, remote sites and grid-constraint exposure make mining an ideal candidate for hybrid solar + BESS and utility-scale wheeled PPAs.

Why it matters

Why mining requires a different playbook

Mines are not warehouses. They consume power at industrial-utility scale, they typically sit on constrained parts of the grid, they operate 24/7, and their capital allocation is scrutinised by boards to the third decimal place. That means a mining renewable strategy needs to combine multi-MW behind-the-fence generation, multi-MWh storage, and — often — a wheeled PPA overlay, all evaluated on a full lifecycle-cost basis.

Baseload & scale

Mining loads are large, continuous and demand-heavy. Solar-only rarely moves the needle. The real case is integrated: solar + BESS + wheeling, sized against a full electricity budget.

Grid-constraint exposure

Remote and constrained network locations create both risk (curtailment, unreliability) and opportunity (grid-serving generation). Solving both takes a properly resourced advisor.

Decarbonisation reporting

Scope 1 and Scope 2 targets are increasingly hard-coded into offtake agreements and financing covenants. Renewable procurement is now a compliance driver, not just a cost driver.

Our approach

How SOLINK works with mining clients

Mining renewable strategies live or die on the quality of the pre-feasibility work. SOLINK's process is designed to survive board scrutiny.

  1. STEP 01

    Full-load techno-economic study

Behind-the-fence solar, BESS, wheeled PPA and residual grid — modelled together against your production plan and tariff exposure over the life of mine.

  2. STEP 02

    IPP pre-qualification & tender

We run competitive tenders across utility-scale IPPs for wheeled and behind-the-fence deals — pre-qualifying counterparties on bankability, delivery track record and delivery certainty.

  3. STEP 03

    Contract negotiation

Long-tenor PPAs, wheeling agreements and integration contracts negotiated from the mine's side — with lifecycle risk allocation that survives changes in production plan.

Board-grade evidence

Independent evidence that survives investment committee

Mining investment committees do not accept EPC-authored business cases. They want independent, sensitivity-tested economics, verified counterparty diligence, and a defensible risk register. SOLINK's advisory outputs are structured to meet that bar from day one.
