Manufacturing

# Solar, BESS & wheeled energy for South African manufacturers

Multi-shift operations, heavy machinery peaks and rising demand charges make renewable procurement a competitive necessity for South African manufacturers — not an ESG box-tick.

Why it matters

## Why manufacturers benefit disproportionately

Manufacturing plants combine the highest kWh consumption and the sharpest demand peaks of any C&I sector in South Africa. Every rand added to the Eskom tariff is felt directly on the bottom line, and a growing share of that increase now falls on the demand component — where solar alone doesn't help. The result is a very high return on integrated solar plus BESS solutions.

### Heavy demand exposure

Compressors, presses and furnaces drive short, sharp peaks that dominate the demand-charge component of the monthly bill.

### Multi-shift consumption

Solar only covers daylight. Manufacturers running 2–3 shifts need BESS or wheeling to cover the evening and night load — that's where wheeled PPAs shine.

### Production continuity

Load shedding costs a factory more in lost production than the electricity itself. Right-sized BESS eliminates the shedding penalty entirely for many operations.

Our approach

## How SOLINK works with manufacturing clients

SOLINK's methodology starts with the physics of your plant's demand — not with a solar quote. That's what makes the recommendations trustworthy.

1. STEP 01

    ### Demand profile decomposition

We break the site's load into base, process and peak components so BESS is sized against the peaks that actually cost you money — not average load.

2. STEP 02

    ### Solar + BESS integration design

Ratio, technology and dispatch strategy modelled together, not sequentially. Integrated design typically unlocks 20–35% more value than solar-then-BESS.

3. STEP 03

    ### Wheeling overlay evaluation

For manufacturers with load beyond what rooftop can supply, we quantify the incremental case for a wheeled PPA on top of behind-the-meter solar and storage.

Independence matters

## Your side of the table, not the EPC's

Solar EPCs are excellent at building solar. They are less excellent at telling a manufacturer when solar is the wrong answer, when BESS should come first, or when a wheeled PPA would deliver more. SOLINK does not sell hardware. Every recommendation is scored on your business case — not on a quota.

## Ready to look at your site?

Send us 12 months of electricity bills and a short brief on your operation. We'll come back with an independent view on what solar, BESS or wheeling should look like for your specific site.
