Cold Storage

# Solar & BESS for cold storage, packhouses and refrigerated warehousing

Refrigeration is 24/7 and non-negotiable. Solar covers the day, BESS covers the peak, and both protect the cold chain from load shedding — a combination purpose-built for cold storage operators.

Why it matters

## Why cold storage is uniquely exposed — and uniquely rewarded

A cold storage operator's electricity bill is almost entirely refrigeration compressors. That means very high, very stable kWh consumption, aggressive demand charges, and catastrophic downside from any outage. It also means the ROI on well-designed solar + BESS is faster than in almost any other sector, because every kWh offset saves you what Eskom charges — and every peak avoided saves you the demand charge you would have paid.

### 24/7 baseline load

Refrigeration doesn't switch off. Solar production is fully consumed on site — no export losses, no self-consumption gap.

### Demand tariff exposure

Compressor start-up peaks drive material demand charges. BESS peak-shaving typically pays back in 4–6 years on its own.

### Cold-chain risk

A single failed cooling event can wipe out a month of margin. A right-sized BESS eliminates load-shedding risk for the entire cold-chain footprint.

Our approach

## How SOLINK works with cold storage & refrigeration clients

For cold storage clients, we treat backup capability and financial return as one integrated design problem — not as separate projects.

1. STEP 01

    ### Compressor duty analysis

We map compressor cycling, defrost windows and door-open events against the tariff structure. This drives BESS sizing far more accurately than nameplate load.

2. STEP 02

    ### Backup + peak-shave design

One BESS, two jobs: run through load shedding without disturbance, and shave demand during peak windows. Correctly designed, the same battery pays for both.

3. STEP 03

    ### Insurance & compliance liaison

Cold storage insurers often require specific rooftop, fire and cabling standards. We coordinate specifications before EPC bids go out — not after.

Beyond the panels

## The right BESS beats a bigger solar system

For cold storage sites, adding another 100 kWp of solar rarely beats adding the first 500 kWh of storage. SOLINK's demand-first analysis makes sure your capital goes into the technology that actually moves your bill — and protects your product.
